Employment and Skills Gained:

Science Performer at Edinburgh Science Festival

My tour partner and myself travel around numerous primary schools in Scotland leading a workshop to p1-3 pupils about states of matter and chemical/physical reactions. During the workshop we interact with the the children, using volunteers and then leading them through a science experiment. It is my duty, as a driver, to navigate and drive the van to each school keeping to strict time management and ensuring fuel is always monitored. Along with my partner we have to arrange and put away all equipment and props, communicate with school as to where and when to perform, as well as communicating with head office to make sure that every performance runs smoothly and to the school and company's satisfaction.

Actor at Edinburgh Dungeons

As an actor I portray 12 different characters throughout the interactive and fun tour of Edinburgh’s history. As a performer it is important for me to have control of the group at all times, to ensure the safety of both the guests and performers. I also need to maintain character, memories and perform the scenes while being able to think quickly on my feet and adapt to whatever situation may arise. At times I am in charge of ride operations, where I must follow procedures and watch CCTV footage to monitor guests. It is vital that I follow the rota to make sure that I change positions at the correct time to keep the rotation moving. I have learnt to make swift judgments on situations to help prevent or stop unsafe situations.

Front of House at Edinburgh Christmas with Underbelly (2017-2018)

As Front of House staff I was involved in the smooth running of Edinburgh’s Christmas, helping to organise the management of the customers, and the attractions. My main role was as an Elf in the grotto, for each 25 minute show, I would do an introductory briefing to the 20 children and their two parents outside the grotto, before bringing them in trying to make sure all available space was used ensuring customers safety. When it was the children’s turn to come up I would organise their line, get their name and if with another child get their relationship to one another, also choosing an appropriate gift for the children. After Christmas I was involved in other areas of the site as queue manager, or at the front of attractions. I was also a Fire Marshal for the Torchlight Procession in which it was my duty to monitor the processions, ensure the safety of guest and extinguish fires. This has taught me a variety of skills especially that of dealing with and monitoring the safety in extremely busy situations and making sure that my voice is heard.

Activity Leader at Centre of English Studies (2017)

As an activity leader I was given an itinerary for each day, and it was my duty to correspond with both students and their group leaders to take them round each of the designated tourist attractions informing them of the history and interesting facts which I had researched prior. Doing all this while keeping to strict timings, making sure all students are understanding the English and present and communicating with group leaders and the management team back at the school. While on school it was my duty to make sure all student’s knew where they were meant to be; their class and classroom and also collect students from airport and lead the inductions and orientation tour on arrival. I also had to help with any tasks that needed done, for example photocopying the children’s ID and filing them, putting up signs, preparing packed lunches, moving things around and just general cleaning and maintenance of the school.

Promotional Staff at Gilded Balloon Teviot Venue (2017)

It was my duty to advertise each of the shows at the Gilded Balloon Teviot venue. I would have to research the information about the show; what it was about, the ticket prices, the timings and critic reviews so that I could promote as best I can. I would the hand out flyers and speak to the general public to try and get them to buy tickets for the show. I had to make sure to always keep upbeat and positive with lots of energy so that I looked approachable to the public and not be disheartened when numerous people would reject or ignore my promoting.

Activity Leader and Teacher at St Andrew’s College Language School (2017)

I had two jobs at St Andrew’s College Language School an English teacher and an activity leader. As an English teacher it was my role to discuss with my co teacher of which lessons we had to prepare so that the lesson for the two classes corresponded. We would teach an hour and a half lesson to one class then swap with our co-teacher and teach the other class. Similar to my Activity leading in CES I was given an itinerary for each day, and corresponded with both students and group leaders to guide them round the attractions informing them of the history and interesting facts from my research. Doing all this while keeping to strict timings, making sure all students are understanding the English and present and communicating with group leaders and the management team back at the campus. I also had to prepare three activities for our on campus days, my focus being drama, musical theatre and talent show prep.

Science Communicator for Generation Science Tour at Edinburgh International Science Festival (2017)

My tour partner and myself travel around numerous primary schools in Scotland to perform to p1-3 pupils a performance about forces, in which we have devised and rehearsed. During the show we interact with the audience, using volunteers and then facilitating a workshop. It is my duty, as solo driver, to navigate and drive the van to each school keeping to strict time management and ensuring fuel is always monitored. Along with my partner we have to arrange and put away all equipment and props, communicate with school as to where and when to perform, as well as communicating with head office to make sure that every performance runs smoothly and to the school and company's satisfaction.

Science Communicator at Edinburgh International Science Festival (2017)

Similar to that of the Generation Science Tour, I would lead workshops and ‘drop-ins’ of various different stations to help children to engage more actively with science. I was train on two ‘drop-ins’ and three workshops, working with things such as circuits and soldering, computer programing and making slime. Between all stations I was working with children from 0-15 years old; due to this I had to learn to pay close attention to get the right level of science communicated to the children for their understanding and be willing to increase complexity or simplify due to my audience in an instance.

Elf at Great Grottos (2016)

In this role I would either work on the queue, where I would first have to find out a bit about the children and then report back to Santa, to help the children believe that he was real, before collecting them and taking them to see Santa. During their meeting I would sit and contribute to the meeting and take posed photo; the whole time supervising the queue and watching out for pre-booked customers. If I was not on the queue I would work on the till, where I would deal with the customers, trying to get them to purchase a package, then I would handle the cash and print pictures and construct the package. It was essential that ensured I kept the 'Christmas magic' alive, I had to make sure that the children really believe that I was an elf and that it was the real Santa.

Graduate Assistant at Fettes College Preparatory School (2014/2015):

I undertook numerous duties including supervising: break, homework, activities, and meals, signing out the children at home time, working the reception desk, locking up the school at the end of the night and many others duties. The teaching involved teaching English as a Foreign Language and Support for Learning, while I also assisted in many classes, from Maths and English and even was given the opportunity to teach classes, including core subjects, and also Drama and even a Latin lessons. I assisted directing three productions, one of which was in Latin.  I also was involved in supervising trips both for specific subjects, boarders’ weekend outings and matches for the sports’ teams which I coached.

Costumes at Disney World Orlando (2014):

In charge of distributing, cleaning, organising and assisting performers with the costumes in the busiest costume department of Walt Disney World in Walt Disney World Orlando, Magic Kingdom Character Room. Due to this large and constant demand, there were regular moments of high pressure and long hours working both independently and in a team. The ability to stay calm but effective in these high-pressure situations were key. I gained skills in working for a family and child-orientated multi-national company.

Lifeguarding (2013):

Working as a lifeguard at Six Flags White Water Park in Marietta, Georgia USA; where my job consisted of lifeguarding, ride attending, cleaning and helping ensure the safety of the guests and the employees at the park. Again, this employment prepared me for working with families and children.

Secretary at Midland Electrical Ltd (2012):

My role consisted of answering phones, filing, letter-taking and assisted in a sales drive for new customers. Due to the nature of being a cover, quick on the job learning and good customer service skills were vital. Experience ensured that helped my organisational skills were developed, something which is vital in the busy life of a freelance.

Bartender (2012):
Bartender at The Royal Highland Show, a prominent very busy premier event in Scotland having to deal with a range of different and sometimes difficult situations in a calming manner.  Again, I feel that this adds to my skill-base to be an effective teacher.

Babysitting (2010- Present):
Normally starting with picking the children up from school or clubs and taking them home where I would occasionally cook them dinner, help with homework and then par take in fun activities such as rounders, baking or teaching hair styles before preparing and putting the children to bed, often involving storytelling.  It is experience such as this which, I feel, exemplifies my nurture of children.

Volunteering and Skills Gained:

Romania (2007- 2011):

Each summer for four years, I worked at a camp in Romania for unprivileged children, by performing different sketches, teaching them, cleaning the camp, helping prepare food, giving them activities to do and visiting orphanages/ mental institution. Raising a total of £8,000, by holding a BBQ, doing a sponsored run, selling hoodies and T-shirts, USB wristbands and helping organise a Charity Ball. The skills of organising events and the experience of working closely with children of another culture has, I feel stood me in good stead.

Netball Coaching (2016):

I am currently coaching netball at Kinnoull Primary School in Perth. I will be coaching a group of approximately 20 children every week for at least a term. I will be improving the children’s basic netball skills and helping them with match play through drills and game play. Relationships are extremely important and I hope to build up a good, caring, but respectful relationship with both the children and their parents/carers.
